Meet The Panelists

Note-Worthy Discussion Points

Q: It can often be difficult to find a therapist that will accept our insurance, difficult to find space to book an appointment in a timely manner, and resources are limited. People are actively trying to get help, but there are not systems in place to support everyone in a timely manner. What do you recommend we do?

A: Check out online therapy resources! Here are a few reliable sources:

  • Headway Therapy: this site will help you find a therapist who accepts your insurance and provides great care.

  • Psychology Today: can help you find a therapist near you, and can filter by insurance.

  • BetterHelp: a mental health platform that provides direct online counseling and therapy services via web or phone text communication.

Q: What are your personal methods of approaching maintaining mental health? What are your solutions?

A: Get outside of the College of Music! Spend time around people who may change or have differing perspectives. Become friends with non-music friends: talk to students who have different majors. Consistently remind yourself of your “whys.” Invest in your relationships! Ask yourself, "What does 'healthy work' look like for ME?" - "healthy" differs person to person!

Q: What strategies/systems have you found beneficial in striving to support your student's mental health?

A: Be consistent in referring back to individual check-ins with students; it’s not a one-time thing! Truly listen to what your students are telling you - invest in them and place value in being with your students. Be resilient in making connections with your students. There will be some who will put up walls, but as you continually make the effort to connect, they will find trust in you! Truly and genuinely commit to being there for EVERY SINGLE ONE of your students. Learn to see your students as individuals. Make yourself approachable! The best thing you can do is care about your students beyond the classroom. To be a great educator, your heart truly needs to be in it - don’t do it JUST for the paycheck.
